Description
General: sparsely flat-short-stiff-hairy perennial herb, 20-40
cm tall, from a branched, woody root crown.
Leaves: alternate, on lower part of stem, odd-pinnate,
the 11-17 leaflets narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, 1-2 cm
long, rounded but with a small, abrupt point at tip. Stipules
membranous, lanceolate, 5-12 mm long, reddish-brown.
Flowers: about 10 to 50 in tall, narrow clusters on long
stalks, terminal or from upper leaf axils. Flowers 10-13 mm
long, with brownish bracts at bases. Calyx bell-shaped,
half as long as the corolla, the teeth linear-lanceolate,
almost equal, sharp-pointed, about twice the length of the
tube, the lower ones spreading. Corollas pink to lavender,
prominently lined with darker reddish-purple, the wings not
over half as long as the prominent keel.
Flowering time: June-August.
Fruits: obovate in outline, 6-8 mm long, strongly short-
hairy and prominently wrinkled, somewhat prickled,
1-seeded, not splitting.
Distribution
Meadows and disturbed areas in parts of MT. A native of
Europe, where it is grown for stock feed, occasionally
introduced in B.C. and WA among other areas. |
