Helianthella - Little Sunflowers
Asteraceae
Contents English Names Index

Helianthellas, or little sunflowers, are taprooted, leafy-stemmed perennial herbs with leaves simple and entire, at least the lower opposite.
The flowerheads have large, yellow rays. The involucral bracts are more or less herbaceous, in several series, almost equal or overlapping, or the outer ones enlarged. The receptacle is flat or convex, chaffy throughout, its bracts clasping the achenes. There are numerous disk flowers. The achenes are strongly compressed at right angles to the involucral bracts, and are thin-edged. The persistent pappus consists of several partly joined, fringed, short scales, and commonly 2 slender bristles.
The genus has 8 species, restricted to western N. America.
